Property Info

Although small in size, this property helps to protect one of the most historically significant docking sites along the eastern shore of Georgian Bay. Manitou Dock was built to accommodate the large steamboats that brought visitors and provisions to the Twelve Mile Bay area before the era of roads. The dock became a central gathering place for the community, and remained so for a while after the ships stopped running in the 1960s. In later years, however, it has returned to nature, and in 2006 was donated to the Georgian Bay Land Trust. Remnants of the docking cribs can still be found along the shoreline. In addition to the historical significance, the property includes small examples of representative vegetation community types ranging from White Cedar forest to small coastal meadow marsh pockets.
