Property Info

Despite its name, Little McCoy is a large (35 acre / 14 hectare) island that came to the Georgian Bay Land Trust in late 2012 after some very generous eleventh hour donations and a heroic effort by the project team. This island is part of a string of outlying islands in the Pointe au Baril area, with Little McCoy being the furthest north of the island chain.
Although they are exposed to extreme wind and wave activity, Little McCoy and the other islands in the Mink and McCoy chain support a wide variety of flora and fauna; a diversity of vegetation communities are found scattered in pockets of soil throughout Little McCoy island. Notable is the extensive Leatherleaf bog community that stretches along a large depression that runs through the centre of the island. Little McCoy’s long sheltered shoreline collects sandy material that supports a number of interesting plant species including the showy Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis).
Georgian Bay reptiles are well represented as well. Blanding’s turtle, Eastern foxsnake, Five-lined skink and Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake have all been documented on Little McCoy Island.
