Property Info

The Harris easement is located along the eastern shore of Indian Harbour. It includes a large beaver-controlled pond with fen shores, three sheltered bays, including one that is dominated by an Atlantic Coastal Plain meadow marsh and an interior of representative White Pine – Red Oak – Red Maple forest intermixed with rock barrens. Open and shrubbed rock barrens are the dominant community along the shores of the property but occasional depressions in the bedrock create some interesting wetlands, including a small Shrub – Graminoid fen. The interior is primarily forested with occasional upland pockets of open rock barren communities, including a high point that serves as the northeastern boundary. The Atlantic Coastal Plain meadow marsh provides habitat for some typical Atlantic Coastal Plain flora including Carolina Yellow-eyed Grass (Xyris difformis), a provincially rare plant as well as a Great Lakes endemic, Stiff Yellow Flax (Linum medium var. medium). The large beaver-controlled pond is characterized by boggy shores, providing ideal habitat for the turtles and for a number of orchids.
