"This land has been in my family since 1906 after my uncle surveyed it. Because my sons and I don't get up to the Bay much anymore we decided to donate to the Conservancy. In this way we knew it would be preserved in it's natural state and never developed. It is there for other Bay lovers to enjoy."
-- Dr. Courtland Mackenzie |
Preservation and Protection
The Georgian Bay Land Trust is a not-for-profit,
registered charity, whose goal is to protect the uniqueness of the
eastern shore and North Channel of Georgian Bay through the securement
and on-going stewardship of land that has ecological, geological and
historical importance. Through this work, the GBLT works to educate
and promote the importance of this area. The GBLT is one of 39 land
trusts working in Ontario to protect important private land from development
and loss of native habitats and flora and fauna. As one of the first
land trusts in Ontario, GBLT has been a leader in many facets, helping
to promote the land trust movement and support other land trusts in
their interests and activities in other areas throughout the province.
Securing Properties for Preservation
Since forming in 1991, the GBLT has secured and currently stewards 15 properties
that have come to the Trust via donations, purchases, conservation easements
and a lease. Currently, both independently and in partnership with the Nature
Conservancy of Canada, our land protection committee is actively involved in discovering
new opportunities and assessing these opportunities with the goals and objectives
of the Trust and the funds available to purchase, if necessary and steward
these potential projects.
The Trust depends on the local residents in each of the communities where our properties are found, to assist us in the monitoring and on-going management and protection of each property's natural features. This provides the Trust with assistance in the on-going stewardship of the property and an opportunity to promote and educate others on the significance of this area. ![]() Members and Volunteers
The accomplishments of the Trust are a result of our strong working Board
and previous part-time and current full- and part-time staff', all of whom bring a deep love
of Georgian Bay as well as his or her talent to the mission of the Trust.
The combination of dedication, depth of knowledge and high levels of energy have
facilitated the development of our organization. Our Board includes 17
dedicated Directors and an Advisory Board of 14 key individuals
(to learn more about our Board, please see…).
To help facilitate the activities of the Trust, a number of our Directors and Advisors participate in a variety of committees. These include the Executive Committee, Fundraising Committee, Finance Committee, Land Protection Committee, Communications Committee and Stewardship Committee. These committees include both Board members and volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering on one of our committees, please contact us at info@gblt.org.
